However you start your Writing at present - whether promoting a product or service, your business or yourself - through a Web page, Mini-Site, E-Mail, or even Writing a Paying Article, Letter or Blog Page - the elements to ensure your final copy will be successful (bring you in a positive response/earn money) depend largely on whether or not these FOUR ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS are understood - and applied - in your thinking (and then to your Writing)!
Note: These elements relate to all Writing in general. There are also special Articles on ‘Writing For The Web - including the use of Keywords’ and ‘Writing To Sell or Promote’ - to follow later.
Start Right - and you’re halfway there!
OK - so WHERE do you START..? For any form of Writing, you first
need an IDEA of what you want to get across in your message ...
Including something that could add an extra element of persuasion
or intrigue into it, but with the following parameters firmly in mind
from the start. These lead to:
The 1st ELEMENT: An image of who you are Writing to... the kind of AUDIENCE you’re trying to attract, and convey your message to. Nowadays, this is much easier to get - using the Internet as the ultimate research tool...
Search, Discover and Deploy!
Whoever you’re writing to, and whatever you’re trying to say, you can search on Google to find Sites offering similar things to what you’re going to write about - and
get a ‘feel’ for the kind of things your target audience is most interested in, relating to your subject. This can be done by checking the words most used to describe this, and those which get the highest ranking (this can be found at www.keyworddiscovery. com/search.html). PLUS -
You can also get a ‘feel’ for the kind of people your audience is, by looking at the Sites
that they visit the most/are highest in the rankings. Another great thing about online searching, is that the results you get can also strengthen or change the IDEA you originally had, for the better, too!
Obviously, Google search is also a great tool for discovering the best keywords to use for your online Writing (for Headlines, benefits, descriptions, etc) - and that’s all covered in more depth in our forthcoming ‘Writing For The Web’ Article). (Don’t forget to weave the best, most relevant keywords into anything you’re writing for an online audience!)

Now you know more about your Writing IDEA and your AUDIENCE, you’re ‘armed’ and ready to gather:
The 2nd ELEMENT - That EIGHT-LETTER WORD: Benefits ... which Benefits will appeal to them the most..? Yes, writing successful copy for almost any Writing genre is all about portraying the right BENEFITS to your intended audience. It’s also about psychology. After all, in all human life, we’re all secretly asking ‘What’s in it for ME?’ So BENEFITS are what will keep your potential customer reading in those crucial first seconds of seeing your copy. (Your benefits could also include the form of something abstract - like saving your Readers time and/or money!)
Thinking of benefits should also make it easier to decide how to progress your Writing, too, whether your Writing is to sell something, describe something or provide information.
Here’s how it works:
If you’re writing a Sales Letter, Web Promotion, or Ad, etc - with the prime aim of selling a product or service, or to get new subscribers to sign up (either for your business, or a freelance clients) you’ll certainly need to portray a strong BENEFIT in your Headline, and ‘Secondary Benefits’ in your Sub- Heads, Bullet-points and Response/buy wording too.
So you’ll need a good list of related BENEFITS to use throughout your copy, to get you started.
